Surface dressing as a technique involves the application of a layer of bitumen emulsion to the road surface, followed by a layer of aggregate chips. The bitumen acts as a binding agent, holding the chips in place and forming a waterproof seal over the surface of the road. The aggregate chips provide a textured surface that improves skid resistance and protects the underlying pavement from damage caused by traffic and weathering.

Single dressing covered by second layer of binding, superior strength, smoother finish
Pad coat dressing
Light application of binder and small chippings
Racked dressing
Two layers of pad coat, the second with smaller chippings, for added stability
Sandwich dressing
